The town we know today as Borculo has a long history dating back to 959 a.d. It was at this time the name Borculo appears for the first time in a deed of gift (land grant). In the deed Otto I of Germany granted to the St. Peters Cloister in Maagdenborg the "Villa Borgio" in Hamaland. That was on August 28, 959.

Borculo or (Borchlo -Castle in the Forest) gets its name from a forrner castle built there in the middle of the 12th century by the Lord of Borculo (Rothoflis of Borclo) who received the site as a fief. Borculo at that time was already independent territory.

In 1337, Hendrik (Lord of Borculo) founded a chapel by his castle at Borculo. Sometime after this a settement grew around the castle near the chapel. He also made the chapel available for his subordinates and from this chapel the old church developed and still forms the center of Borculo.

This version of the castel is from a 2003 Borculo-Achterhoek brochure from the Borculo Muesum
