Van Borculo Census Records -1860

Again, because you're researching a "Van Borculo" line, you've been directed to this page first, to help guide you through the maze of variant spellings you'll be encountering. Anyone not thoroughly familiar with the mind-boggling alliterations and cross-over spellings may easily hit an impasse trying to focus on one particular spelling.

To help avoid the same pitfalls most Van Borculo line veterans have experienced, I've prepared several examples to encourage those new to Van Borculo research to place less emphasis on the spelling while focusing more on locale, family names and specific data.

A reminder: the spelling here will represent that taken from the census. It may not represent the current or preferred spelling by the individual, his family or his descendants.

Example 1: Frederick Bartlow(1825-1877) , is actually a Barricklow, as are all the other "Bartlows" listed in Randolph Twp., Ohio Co.,IN in 1860. One would assume the census taker was new to the county because the Barricklows, by 1860, had been a sizable clan in this small community for almost 50 years by then. Frederick was a son of Farrington Barricklow(c1783-1836).

Example 2: Derrick Burcalow(1796-1870), was a son of Cornelius Barkalow(1755-1826), and grandson of William Barkalow (1714-1766) of the Monmouth Co.,NJ., Barkalow branch. Some of this branch adopted the Burcalow spelling permanently after 1850, particularly those that emigrated to Rock Co.,WI.

Example 4: T.[Thomas] A.Barklow(1830-p1880), can be tracked to a New Utrecht,NY Barkuloo branch that settled near Cincinnati,OH and briefly in Kentucky before settling in Little Rock, Arkansas.
